How a major electric utility more than doubled their interconnection requests processing power

By setting up a self-service distributed generation interconnection portal between the utility and installers, they reduced processing time from 4 weeks down to 7 days.

The opportunity - simplify the distributed generation interconnection approval process for customers and utilities

As the largest energy delivery company in their state, our utility customer is tasked with providing electricity to millions of customers safely, reliably, and around the clock.

They were also faced with thousands of applications every month for DG interconnections. These were causing backlogs that stretched issuing the Permission to Operate well past the 30-day timeframe. Installers would find themselves with solar panels and other DERs not able to power up these valuable assets. This threatened to cause rates to rise, energy accessibility to deteriorate, and customer confidence to erode.

They realized they needed a way to make the application process more efficient. Their customers needed a clear and simple process that did not discourage the growth of DG resources to the grid. And they had to do it all while complying with FERC and local ISO guidelines.

The solution – automate the process

The utility had a clear goal: make a program easy for installers to participate in, and provide fast application processing and approval with zero complaints.

They needed auto-population of basic consumer information with project identifying info and digital signature processing. This all needed to be seamlessly automated and highly accurate.

Importantly, they also needed to ensure that the digital platform met local and federal guidelines.

Where DNV came in

They chose a proven solution already trusted by 25+ utilities.

Our low-code and workflow-driven digital platform that utilities configure themselves, without heavy IT dependence, to manage the entire DG interconnection lifecycle, from application intake through permit to operate.

By configuring their own data, workflows, rules and reporting, utilities gain control over the DG interconnection process without being locked into rigid structures or long IT development cycles. Automation reduces manual effort, improves consistency, and creates a more transparent experience for customers, installers, and internal stakeholders alike.

With DNV, the utilities saw more and bigger benefits than they every imagined:

75 %

fewer days to issue PTO

80 %

more documents processed every year

165 %

increase in annual application processed

More efficient More productive Added capabilities

More efficient

Application processing that had been measured in weeks was cut down to 7 days.

More productive

Before implementation, the utility was processing around 15,800 applications per year. They are now processing 42,000 in that same time, with no increase in staff or resources.

Added capabilities

The utility now processes around 100 applications per month that are fully automated, with no input from personnel. This is a capability they never had before.

Building digital platforms that deliver for program managers

  1. Automated validation and notification workflows
  2. Smart routing of incomplete applications before review
    a. Missing or incomplete applications submittals declined by 45%, resulting in
  3. Exception-based queues for program managers
    a. 92% decrease in amount of time program managers or analysts spend reviewing applications
  4. Integrated inspection workflows via mobile application
  5. Centralized tracking of customer interactions and communications
