Fewer transit disruptions for Singapore commuters

DNV’s Smart Cable Guard helps SBS Transit reduce cable-related service disruptions for commuters on Singapore rail networks

Challenge
SBS Transit, a major public transport operator in Singapore, wanted to improve the reliability and integrity of the medium-voltage (MV) distribution network for its North East Line (NEL) and Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit (SP-LRT). NEL, S-LRT and P-LRT rail systems cover distances of 20, 10.7 and 10.3 km respectively, serving a total of 45 stations. Many thousands of commuters rely on the trains every day, so guarding against service disruption due to cable failure is paramount.

Solution
DNV is implementing a complete monitoring solution for the 22-kV power distribution network for SBS Transit’s rail system using the latest generation of DNV’s Smart Cable Guard (SCG 2.0) system. This sensor-based system quickly and accurately pinpoints faults and weak spots in cables, allowing SBS Transit to resolve failures faster and identify potential problems before they lead to failures. This helps reduce both the number and duration of cable-related service disruptions on the lines monitored. SBS Transit is also using the system to improve their condition monitoring and predictive maintenance processes.

Added value
The system was initially installed for a six-month pilot. Analysis of the results of this trial period demonstrated how Smart Cable Guard perfectly matched SBS Transit’s needs. SCG 2.0 is the only system that can cover the entire MV cable network, and visualize the most probable failure spot along the cable. The success of the pilot led to SBS Transit agreeing a long-term contract that includes installing the system on all three lines with annual monitoring services across their power distribution network.
