Helping build an industry: Anne-Lene’s journey at the forefront of floating offshore wind
Few engineers have the opportunity to influence an entire industry's approach to technology and safety. Anne Lene Haukanes Hopstad from DNV’s Renewables Certification business is one of them.
Over the past 15 years, Anne Lene has played a key role in developing DNV's floating wind standard, helping guide the evolution of floating offshore wind from an emerging concept to a globally recognized technology. On International Women in Engineering Day, we are proud to celebrate her contributions to engineering, innovation, and the energy transition. By celebrating her achievements, we also celebrate the countless women who continue to shape the engineering landscape.
From curiosity to career
Anne Lene's passion for engineering started with a love of science and technology and was inspired by her father, who also is an engineer. After beginning her career in oil and gas, she moved into renewables to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Today, she manages offshore wind certification projects around the world, supporting both bottom-fixed and floating wind developments. What she enjoys most about DNV is the opportunity to work with talented colleagues across a global organization in different locations, where every project brings new challenges, perspectives, and opportunities to learn.
Building lasting legacy
One of the highlights of her career has been leading the development of DNV's floating wind standard, DNV-ST-0119. From the first version published in 2013 to the latest revision in 2025, she has helped ensure the standard evolves alongside the rapidly growing floating wind industry.
The importance of trust and teamwork
Reflecting on what it takes to succeed, Anne Lene emphasizes the importance of balancing hard work with time off to recharge. While understanding the bigger picture is essential, so is trusting your team and empowering others to contribute their expertise.
Her advice to young women considering engineering is simple: trust your abilities. The challenges that seem daunting at the start of your career often become second nature with experience, and confidence grows with every new opportunity.
As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, Anne Lene's journey reminds us of the impact engineers can have in shaping a more sustainable future, and the importance of inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
