Today it is 5 years since one of the more well-known major accidents from recent years. The Macondo accident, where the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon was subject to loss of well control, caused the loss of 11 lives and is considered to be the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry.
The lessons learned from the accident have resulted in several pervasive changes in the industry, and more change is needed as major accidents still occur.
