Safety Culture and Leadership in the Shipping Industry (online training)

This training course is the first step towards understanding how leadership impacts safety culture in the shipping industry.

Objectives

This basic safety culture course will give you better insight into the different types of cultures: from nationalities, organizations, teams, and professions in the shipping industry

  • To understand the complexity of safety culture in organizations in the shipping industry, where the different types of culture are all apparent.
  • To understand the different leadership styles and the influence on (safety) culture
  • To give insight into models and methods for intervention in changing (safety) culture

Entrance requirements

Sound experience in shipping and ship operations

Captains, Chief engineers, Chief Officers, Fleet managers, Crew Managers, Technical Managers, Superintendents, Vessel Managers, QHSE-Managers, Safety Managers

Duration: 2 days classroom (or LIVE virtual classroom solution)


Safety Culture interventions are the next measures for reducing incidents and accidents in Shipping. Any group with a stable membership and a history of shared learning will have developed some level of culture. This can be a group of same nationality, same company, same branch office, same team, on board the same ship or same occupation. Culture is constantly reenacted and created by our interactions with others and shaped by our own behavior. 

The maritime business is, by its very nature, a truly global business. This means that every day people in that industry from different cultures and different countries are interacting with each other. Safety leadership and values drive continuous improvement.  How we are supposed to perceive, feel and act in a given shipping company, department, team or occupation has been taught to us by our various socialization experiences.

The training includes activities that will develop the capabilities of the participants to understand cultural differences, the influence of leadership and the effects on the day-to-day operations in the shipping industry. Participants will be invited to share experiences and examples of their own. Examples of safety cultural measures will be presented.

Due to current circumstances, this training is available via LIVE Virtual Classroom until further notice. It consists of a combination of live online lectures, Q&A sessions and small group work.

This course will be conducted by Paul Kuin, M.Sc in Change Management and Culture. Paul is a Principal Auditor at DNV in the Netherlands and has worked for over 35 years in the shipping industry. He is keen to share his knowledge and experience regarding culture and leadership.
