Performance and Fuels

Shipping is the most energy efficient form of transport. Yet there is still significant potential to improve efficiencies throughout the value chain and become more environmentally friendly. For shipping to capitalise on this potential, energy efficiency has to be improved by a combination of technical and operational measures. The role of connectivity at sea, combined with introduction of real time performance monitoring has the potential to drastically change the way ships are operated and serve as an important tool in the effort to improve efficiency.

Alternative fuels for shipping is also an area of high interest for the industry. The energy mix for shipping is likely to be much more diverse in the future, as a response to emissions regulations and volatile oil prices. The introduction of alternative fuels can significantly contribute to a greener shipping industry. Understanding challenges related to the cost of installing equipment and operating with a new fuel, its sustainability and environmental footprint characteristics, as well as addressing safety-related issues are the main goals of this activity.

Activities:

  • Technologies for energy efficiency improvements
  • Performance Monitoring
  • Alternative Fuels: environmental footprint, cost, and safety
  • New engine technologies, power supply systems
  • Technologies for emissions reduction
  • Identifying future maritime trends
  • Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of the requirements to environmental performance within the maritime industry
  • Contributing to understanding how the maritime industry impacts both the local and the global environment
  • Achieving cost-effectiveness through new technical and operational solutions
  • Modelling energy consumption and emissions
