DNV GL's strategic maritime research programme with new position paper on the need for standards as an enabler of digitalisation in the maritime industry.
DNV GL - Group Technology and Research's Maritime programme presented its new position paper on the need for standards to an audience of 140 participants from the maritime industry attending the Innovation Conference E-nav.no held in Oslo on September 7th. The paper, titled “Standardisation as an enabler of digitalization – in the maritime industry”, addresses how standards could be used to improve data flow and thereby enable new digital services based on sensor data from ships. The paper has been authored by Steinar Låg and Silje Brathagen With, and is the result of work done in the MODAM project partly funded by the Research Council of Norway and their MAROFF programme.
In his presentation at E-Nav, Steinar Låg gave several examples of data quality and other challenges experienced in recent pilot projects, and argued that new standards would help, for example by improving systematics and quality in the data collection.
