Safety assurance primarily addresses the process for creating grounds for justified confidence that a system is safe during operation.

Key in the assurance process is generation of evidence about the system through verification. In this paper we discuss the generation of evidence and the resulting properties of the generated evidence. As technology enables higher levels of complexity to be implemented in safety-critical applications, we need to take a step back and re-evaluate the methodology by which evidence is generated and how our confidence in any piece of evidence is assessed.
