The 2030 climate and energy policy framework for the European Union (EU), which was agreed by the European Council on 23 October 2014, provides the basis for further decarbonisation of the European economy. It builds upon the existing 2020 framework and shall ensure that the EU stays on track to reaching its objective of moving to a low-carbon economy by 2050. The new 2030 framework includes a number of headline targets to be achieved by 2030, for instance with regards to the reduction of GHG emissions or the share of renewable energy sources in total consumption.
