Panel discussion: Decarbonizing hydrogen production – Is carbon capture and storage (CCS) crucial?

Watch our panel discussion with experts from CarbonNet, Technology Centre Mongstad, Illinois State Geological Survey, IEAGHG, Aker Carbon Capture and DNV GL to debate the key issues on the role of blue hydrogen.

In DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook we forecast that the demand for hydrogen as an energy carrier will initially largely be met by blue hydrogen. Furthermore, while green hydrogen will start to scale later, and faster than blue hydrogen, we see a balanced mix of about 50/50 blue and green hydrogen in 2050. This forecast requires that we scale the adoption of CCS alongside development of necessary infrastructure for both hydrogen and CO2.

Watch the recording of panel discussion with key industry players from CarbonNet, Technology Centre Mongstad, Illinois State Geological Survey, IEAGHG, Aker Carbon Capture and DNV GL experts as we addressed some key questions that are being raised when debating the role of blue hydrogen:

  • Why is CCS struggling to gain traction?
  • Do we need CCS to scale hydrogen demand, why not move straight to green hydrogen?
  • What policy mechanisms are needed to scale CCS fast enough for the hydrogen economy?
  • What can industry do to drive adoption of CCS forward?
  • What are the main hurdles to broader public support for CCS?

Panelists for Session 1 include:

  • Steve Marshall, Operations Director at CarbonNet
  • Dr. Monica Garcia, Senior Technology Analyst – Carbon Capture Systems at IEAGHG
  • Arne Thorsen Kolle, Commercial Manager at Technology Centre Mongstad
  • Jon Christopher Knudsen, Chief Commercial Officer at Aker Carbon Capture
  • Hamish Holt, Senior Principal Consultant at DNV GL

Panelists for Session 2 include:

  • Steve Whittaker, Director, Energy and Minerals at Illinois State Geological Survey
  • Dr. Monica Garcia, Senior Technology Analyst – Carbon Capture Systems at IEAGHG
  • Arne Thorsen Kolle, Commercial Manager at Technology Centre Mongstad
  • Jon Christopher Knudsen, Chief Commercial Officer at Aker Carbon Capture
  • Martha Ramos-Gomez, Head of Section Assurance at DNV GL
  • Hamish Holt, Senior Principal Consultant at DNV GL

Decarbonizing hydrogen production

Hydrogen can be produced in several ways, but if it is to help in the battle with climate change, the process will have to be decarbonized
