1. How does the technology ensure that the vendor cannot manipulate the test results?
We have conducted calibrated trials to prove that we can get repeatable and consistent results from our existing methods. For remote survey, our customers agree to show us what we require so that we can ensure that the testing is done correctly. This allows us to access anything we would be able to see on site, including beyond the actual item we are surveying. In this way our personnel stay in control and the risk of manipulation is the same as being on site.
Note that remote survey is not a method to replace all inspection activities. Some project steps require the surveyor to attend in person, and in such cases we carry out additional checks.
2. For remote survey, what cost-benefit analysis has DNV GL performed?
We have developed a cost-benefit analysis to provide guidance on when a remote survey is most applicable to a project. This includes factors such as distance to the site, resources required, and factors related to operations and schedule. We have tested this on a wide range of projects and are happy to provide details and examples upon request.
3. How does DNV GL address the question of data ownership and proprietary information?
We cover and manage the proprietary nature of projects via contractual arrangements. If any change occurs, we include and communicate this as part of the contract. We can provide support around the implementation and handling of video and audio information if this is not specifically included within current agreements.
4. If the site inspection is not a single activity, but part a combined inspection, how does DNV GL ensure timely and effective transfer of site information and certification?
For the transfer of images, we use the mobile phone network or satellite communication, and broadband if it is available. In general, we prefer to use live connections to allow the DNV GL subject matter expert to be in control of the activity, because it allows instant collaboration to ensure that the required scope is covered.
In most cases we issue certificates or any other reporting within a few minutes of the activity being completed off site. In cases where we are asked to review survey documentation sent to us via email, we assess whether this is adequate and sufficient prior to issuing a certification of approval.
