Hydrogen can play a significant role in decarbonizing the world’s energy supply and is receiving increasing focus as the energy transition moves at pace.

Yet, to fully realize the potential, industry and governments must focus on four key areas to scale the hydrogen economy:

  • Safety – The scale of the future hydrogen society will be determined by success in managing safety. Find out how DNV is proving the safety case.
  • Infrastructure – Hydrogen behaves differently to natural gas and will require new or adapted infrastructure. Discover how DNV is supporting the development of efficient infrastructure.
  • Decarbonizing production – Hydrogen must be decarbonized throughout its value chain to answer to climate change. This will require scaling CCS to enable blue hydrogen, and lowering the cost of electrolysis in order to scale green hydrogen. Get insights into how DNV is helping to decarbonize hydrogen production.
  • Policy and strategy – Long-term policy commitments will be essential to building demand for hydrogen. In parallel, companies need to understand the policy landscape and have deep insights into the technical and business aspects of hydrogen. Explore how DNV supports governments and industry with technical and market analysis.

Projects

Power2Gas

In the Netherlands, network operator Stedin is working with DNV on the Power2Gas project, to show that homes can be heated safely and efficiently with hydrogen. DNV manages the project and provides expert support for hydrogen technology.

H21

DNV is proving the safety case for a switch from natural gas to hydrogen in a domestic setting, as a partner in the H21 programme in the UK.

Zero-V

DNV joined several partners to assess the technical, regulatory and economic feasibility of a hydrogen fuel-cell coastal research vessel, and granted a Conditional Approval in Principle (CAiP).

Production and use of hydrogen in Norway

For Norwegian authorities, DNV mapped the role that hydrogen can play in Norway as part of a transition to a low carbon future towards 2030, and provided an up-to-date description of the market and technology status for hydrogen.

Filling the data gap

Recognizing the need for updated data on hydrogen supply in the Netherlands, DNV analyzed the 2019 supply from the five largest industrial clusters in the country – where the majority of hydrogen is produced. DNV GL undertook this research on behalf of a client in the Dutch energy sector.
