DNV GL evaluates wind megaproject in Spain for Repsol Electricidad y Gas

The Delta 2 project is totaling over 860 MW and is made up of 26 wind farms grouped into six groups or clusters. Spanish energy and petrochemical multinational Repsol incorporated renewable assets into its portfolio, following the global trend of oil companies to move towards a greener portfolio. Successful completion of the project is a key step towards Repsol's commitment to work with zero net emissions by 2050.

Spain, March 16 2020 - DNV GL, DNV GL, the world's largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, carried out a technical due diligence for Repsol Electricidad y Gas that was key for the acquisition of the Delta 2 wind megaproject in Aragon, Spain of more than 860 MW. At the end of 2019, the Spanish energy and petrochemical multinational Repsol incorporated these renewable assets into its portfolio, following the global trend of oil companies moving towards a greener portfolio.

The technical report carried out by DNV GL assessed the energy production of the portfolio and reviewed the grid interconnection and its associated infrastructure, potential issues with future curtailments or grid congestion and the status of administrative and environmental permits. The due diligence provided an overview of the project and contributed to the identification of main risks and advantages of the portfolio.

DNV GL provided an independent evaluation of the wind regime and the uncertainty levels of the projects involved considering the portfolio effect. This effect calculates uncertainties for a portfolio of projects, considering partially dependent uncertainties. Given the increase in diversity due to multiple projects in one portfolio, there is the potential for an overall reduction in the uncertainty of the ensemble compared to the sum of the individual projects.

This technical report carried out field inspections and used DNV GL’s digital wind resource assessment tool WindFarmer which analyses the local wind resource and energy production assessments of the wind project’s assets.

The Delta 2 project, which was owned by Forestalia, will be developed in the next three years. and has 26 wind farms grouped into six clusters (Cinca, Gállego, Artigas, Vientos, Jiloca and Montetorrero). With a total installed capacity of 866.2 MW, the new wind portfolio strengthens Repsol's commitment to be zero net emissions by 2050.

According to Red Eléctrica de España, in 2019 wind power became the first installed power technology in the Spanish electricity mix, ahead of the combined cycle, with a total generation capacity of 25,255 MW. This marked a turning point in the transition of the electrical system towards a sustainable energy model.

“Investments such as this made by Repsol are critical to drive the green energy revolution and build the renewable and energy market of the future in Spain and beyond. The use of digital tools such as WindFarmer:Analyst allow the analysis of data in real time which gives more reliable information for investment and maintenance, encouraging the development of new business models and energy services." said Andreas Schröter, Executive Vice President Central Europe, Mediterranean and Latin America at DNV GL - Energy.
