DNV GL ECO solutions help the maritime industry reduce ten million tonnes of CO2 emissions

Shipowners and operators who opted for DNV GL’s ECO solutions have not only increased the efficiency of their fleets, but also improved their carbon footprint, lowering daily CO2 emissions by some 9,000 tonnes and achieving fuel savings of about 2,750 tonnes per day. DNV GL’ s ECO solutions include the performance management portal ECO Insight, the trim optimization tool ECO Assistant as well as the ECO Retrofit and ECO Lines solutions, which increase the fuel efficiency of hull designs.

“Since the first ECO solutions were launched in 2009, our customers have saved a total of ten million tonnes of CO2 and more than three million tonnes of fuel, compared to what their track record would have been without the use of one or more DNV GL ECO solutions,” explains Torsten Büssow, Global Head of Fleet Performance Management DNV GL – Maritime. As a reference, a Supramax bulk carrier produces about 20,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

“We are very pleased that so many customers have chosen to work with us to create a positive impact on efficiency, sustainability and cost-effectiveness in shipping. This cooperation has been very important to us at DNV GL, and has helped us to continually develop and improve our ECO solutions,” Büssow adds.

To date more than 2,500 vessels have been enrolled in one or more of DNV GL’s ECO solutions. The solutions cover all ship types and enable owners and operators to examine every aspect of a vessel’s performance.

About DNV GL ECO solutions:

ECO Insight

DNV GL’s performance management portal ECO Insight provides a comprehensive and easily accessible way to manage the performance of a fleet, including voyage, hull & propeller and engine & systems performance. It enriches the customers’ own fleet reports with industry data, such as Automatic Identification System (AIS), weather, or fuel, and provides unique benchmarking capabilities. Advanced engineering methods, for example hull fouling prediction based on CFD, are also packaged into the portal. Visit www.performance.dnvgl.com to learn more

ECO Assistant

ECO Assistant contains a trim-power model, which is based on ship data and drawings that incorporates seven speeds, seven drafts and seven trim conditions. The optimum trim, related fuel savings and other hydrodynamic results are presented in a user-friendly digital interface. The trim model also includes speed-power and fuel oil consumption (FOC) curves for the full speed range of the vessel, enabling accurate predictions of additional fuel consumption due to extra cargo or ballast. Today, more than 750 vessels world-wide are using ECO Assistant for trim optimization. Visit ECO Assistant service page

ECO Retrofit

DNV GL’s ECO Retrofit service supports the industry in tailoring retrofit projects to the future needs of their fleet. It creates 5,000 to 10,000 vessel-specific bow designs and assesses them for a broad range of operational conditions using CFD. An interactive excel-based tool allows easy and immediate exploration of “what-if” scenarios for changing operational conditions. The input is drawn from the target operational profile and is typically displayed in a matrix of four speeds and three drafts. Visit ECO Retrofit service page

ECO Lines

The ECO Lines solution provides an optimised hull form to ensure that newbuilds are fuel efficient. To determine the right solution for each vessel, DNV GL experts consider operating parameters such as speed and draught, to define the most suited operating profile and analyse some 20,000 hull design variations. The approach combines parametric modelling, advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and genetic optimisation strategies and has been found to boost a vessel’s overall performance by up to 10 per cent.
