DNV, a global leader in risk management and assurance, has issued a certificate of conformity for SAPEON's innovative AI processor IP affirming its compliance with the ISO 26262:2018 automotive functional safety standard achieving Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) for relevant safety functions.
This certification is a significant step forward for the integration of AI and machine learning in automotive systems, enhancing the capabilities of vehicle manufacturers.
SAPEON, a subsidiary of SK Telecom, is at the forefront of AI semiconductor innovation. The company, led by industry experts such as CEO Soojung Ryu and CTO Michael Shebanow, is dedicated to making AI accessible and sustainable, aligning with its vision of enriching humanity through technology.
Alongside this achievement, it highlights DNV’s role not only as a functional safety assurance body, but also as a thought leader in the emerging field of artificial intelligence assurance. The recent launch of DNV's Recommended Practice for the Safe Application of Industrial Artificial Intelligence showcases our commitment to addressing the unique risks associated with AI technologies.
The DNV Recommended Practice focuses on a systems approach, considering the emergent properties and behaviours of AI components and their interactions with other components, humans, and the environment. It emphasizes continuous assurance to accommodate the dynamic nature of AI-enabled systems and promotes collaboration between various actors responsible for different system parts. This comprehensive framework is crucial for companies aiming to comply with the forthcoming European Union Artificial Intelligence Act, which defines AI broadly and applies to any data-driven system deployed in the EU.
Otto Hughes, Director of Business Development for Supply Chain & Product Assurance at DNV, states, “The certification of SAPEON’s artificial intelligence processor for automotive functional safety demonstrates the trend of the automotive industry towards implementation of higher demand processing for artificial intelligence in vehicular systems. DNV has a long history in assuring functional safety of components and systems and stands ready to assure the next generation of automotive technology.”
DNV is committed to its mission of safeguarding life, property, and the environment and continues to support pioneering companies like SAPEON, enabling them to leverage AI technologies responsibly and effectively.
