Guidelines on CII and SEEMP have been finalized – immediate action is recommended

The SEEMP Part III forms part of the IMO’s initial strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, including the ambition to reduce the carbon intensity as an average across international shipping by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050 compared to 2008.

The SEEMP Part III is a dynamic document subject to regular updates and revisions, reflecting the changing performance and required measures. It is intended to help companies achieve the annually required Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) – calculated based on the reported IMO DCS data. Ships are then rated from A to E on how efficiently they transport goods or passengers with regards to CO2 emitted. At least midpoint C rating should be achieved to avoid consequences with further requirements in following years.

The SEEMP Part III needs to be approved and on board by 1 January 2023. The first reporting of the CII based on 2023 data is due no later than 31 March 2024.

With less than half a year to go to ensure compliance with the new MARPOL regulation and meet the SEEMP III verification deadline, it is recommended to take immediate action.

Easy SEEMP III preparation with our digital SEEMP III Generator

To help our customers meet the upcoming SEEMP III challenge, DNV has developed the SEEMP III Generator with customer input. This tool is part of a broader suite of digital tools and is free to DNV DCS customers. Since customer data is already in the system, customers can quickly get an initial fleet overview using our Emissions Insights tool, which lists estimated CII values and also preliminary environmental ratings based on previous years’ vessels’ performance.

The system proposes energy efficiency measures, helping you to reach the required CII rating and improve fuel-efficient operations. This integrated solution is the next step in the emissions management needs of a vessel, effectively becoming a working carbon intensity management platform. The online tool also helps to reduce paperwork, and its streamlined process can be used by both ship managers and third-party consultants working on behalf of DNV DCS customers.

SEEMP Part III – advisory support

For the more challenging vessels or trades, Maritime Advisory by DNV can provide the SEEMP Part III with the most up-to-date accuracy of the level of effectiveness of abatement measures suitable for the individual vessel, taking into account already exploited operational optimizations and investments.

DNV gives you peace of mind

With extensive experience in providing DCS, Emissions Insights reports and other related easy-to-use customer tools, DNV is uniquely positioned to save you time and best prepare you for compliance in a relatively tight timeframe.
