DNV offers a range of services related to alternative fuels and technologies in shipping which includes the Alternative Fuels Insight platform, class services, advisory services and the Maritime Academy.

Class services

Based on our experience, DNV has developed several class rules and notations to support the switch to alternative fuels, preparing ship owners for lower sulphur limits and more. Our rules cover liquefied, compressed gases and low-flashpoint liquid fuels. Based on our class rules and notations, we provide class services for low-flashpoint fuels covered by the IMO’s IGF Code as well as for fuels which are not yet covered by IMO rules.

AFI – Alternative Fuels Insight platform

The digital map to a low emission future: comprehensive insights into worldwide bunkering availability and market data on alternative fuels for ships. Following the success of LNGi and the increasing interest in alternative fuels in shipping, DNV has developed a new platform that provides reliable and comprehensive market and bunkering insight for alternative fuels. The AFI platform makes the information currently in LNGi, and equivalent information on other alternative fuels, available to the public for free. AFI is a web-based platform which provides a reliable overview of the uptake of alternative fuels, with worldwide and continuously updated information. The platform gives detailed and visual insight into existing and planned bunkering opportunities, complemented by thorough statistics and fleet status for alternative fuels.

Initial features on Alternative Fuels Insight:

  • Interactive map of bunkering infrastructure for LNG, LPG and methanol, with detailed project data
  • Statistics on ship uptake for LNG, LPG, scrubber, batteries and methanol
  • Encyclopaedia with information on alternative fuels needed for well-informed decision-making
  • Interactive fuel finder, for fuel request and contact between ship owners and fuel suppliers
