CLASS SERVICES

DNV has developed several class notations to support the switch to low- and zero-carbon fuels, preparing shipowners for a carbon-neutral future.

Class notation

Class notation

Gas Fuelled LNG

Applicable to installations where natural gas (LNG or CNG) is used as fuel. The requirements cover all aspects of the gas-fuel installation, from the ship’s gas-fuel bunkering connection all the way up to and including the gas consumers.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.5 GAS FUELLED SHIP INSTALLATIONS - GAS FUELLED LNG.

Class notation

Gas Fuelled LPG

Applicable to installations where LPG is used as fuel. The requirements cover all aspects of the gas-fuel installation, from the ship’s gas-fuel bunkering connection all the way up to and including the gas consumers.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.13 GAS FUELLED SHIP INSTALLATIONS - GAS FUELLED LPG

Class notation

Class notation

LFL fuelled

Applicable to installations where methanol or ethanol is used as fuel. The requirements cover all aspects of the low flashpoint liquid (LFL) fuel installation, from the ship’s LFL fuel bunkering connection all the way up to and including the consumers.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.6 LOW FLASHPOINT LIQUID FUELLED ENGINES - LFL FUELLED

Class notation

Class notation

Ammonia fuelled

Applicable to installations where Ammonia is used as fuel. The requirements cover all aspects of the fuel installation, from the ship’s fuel bunkering connection all the way up to and including the ammonia consumers.

Class notation

Fuel Ready

For owners who want to prepare their newbuilding for a potential later conversion to alternative fuels: LNG, LPG, Methanol or Ammonia. The additional class notation Fuel Ready has supplementary levels and corresponding requirements. The minimum mandatory levels include:

  • Verification of compliance with Fuel Ready rules for the selected fuel. More than one fuels can be selected.
  • The main tank(s) installed can be converted to gas or dual fuel operation (or are of dual fuel type from newbuilding stage).

In addition, optional levels may be included, i.e. it can be chosen to include different preparations of the ship for a later conversion and include certification and installation of parts of the alternative fuel systems in the newbuilding phase.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.8 FUEL READY SHIPS - FUEL READY

Class notation

Class notation

FC (Fuel Cell)

Applicable to fuel cell power installations. The requirements cover design and arrangement of fuel cell power installations and the spaces containing such installations.

  • FC (Power) is applicable for vessels with fuel cell power installations intended for use in essential, important or emergency services.
  • FC (Safety) is applicable for vessels with fuel cell power installations NOT supplying essential, important or emergency services

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.3 FUEL CELL INSTALLATIONS – FC

Class notation

Class notation

Battery

Applicable to electrical energy storage (EES) installations on electric and hybrid vessel. The requirements cover design, installation and certification requirements for lithium-ion battery systems and electrochemical capacitor systems.

  • Battery (Power) is applicable for vessels where the EES power is used for electrical propulsion of the vessel.
  • Battery (Safety) is applicable for vessels where the aggregated EES installation in one EES space has an rated capacity of 20 kWh or above and not having the Battery(Power) notation.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.1 ELECTRICAL ENERGY STORAGE

Class notation

Class notation

WAPS

Applicable to all ship types with a wind assisted propulsion system (WAPS) installed. The requirements cover operational and technical safety aspects related to the installation of WAPS onboard ships.

DNV Rules Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.12 WIND ASSISTED PROPULSION SYSTEM – WAPS
