Offshore Power Grids: Mission possible?

Insights for the TSO/DNO community

Join us for DNV’s upcoming 1-hour webinar on 23 May 2024 where we will deep-dive into this topic and look at it from a day-to-day business perspective, with contributions from TenneT, Gemini Wind and DNV.

Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 demands a significant upscale in offshore wind energy. The transition to 359 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 is vital. DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook report highlights the need for connecting approximately 3000 offshore wind farms globally by 2050. Most of this wind power will be destined for inland demand, necessitating a monumental leap in the development of offshore power grids in terms of power ratings, voltages, and distances.

This mission presents both challenges and opportunities. Key challenges include regulations, technology development, pace of built-up, standardization, integration into the onshore AC grids, expert staffing, supply chain management, risk mitigation, quality assurance, and the long-term performance of these grids. However, it also opens exciting prospects for innovation, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Join us for DNV’s upcoming webinar, where we will discuss challenges and opportunities from both market and technical perspectives. Get insights from our expert panel members, who will draw on their diverse perspectives, skills, experiences and backgrounds:

  • Dick Lagerweij, Head of Offshore 700 MW AC Projects, TenneT
  • Roel Berns, CEO at Gemini Windpark
  • Wessel Bakker, Business Director Offshore Power Grids, DNV
  • Camiel Oremus, Global Service Area Lead Power Grids, DNV

This webinar is the first in a series of Power Grids webinars, where we will address the challenging journey to enable the energy transition by expanding and reinforcing the grids while leveraging the benefits of digital transformation. This series is of great interest to transmission and distribution system operators, renewable energy suppliers, and regulators. Therefore, we would like to invite you and your team to join us.
