Project Certification Arkona offshore wind farm

378 MW, 35 km northeast of Rügen Island in the Baltic Sea

Customer
E.ON Climate & Renewables Services GmbH (AWE-Arkona-Windpark Entwicklungs GmbH)

Background
AWE-Arkona-Windpark Entwicklungs GmbH is a subsidiary of E.ON Climate & Renewables Services GmbH and is planning the construction and operation of the Offshore Wind Farm Arkona Becken Südost.

The wind farm will be located 35 km northeast of Rügen Island, in the Baltic Sea, Germany. The Arkona offshore wind farm is resulting in the actual layout of 60 WTG locations each equipped with a 6.0 MW wind turbine. The support structure is a monopile with flange connection. For the offshore substation it is a closed structure for the topside and a jacket foundation with grouted connection to the piles. The maximum capacity of the wind farm will be 378 MW. Upon planned completion in 2019, the project will supply renewable energy for approximately 400,000 households and offset 1.2 million tons of CO2 emissions a year.

Services
DNV performs the project certification for the Arkona offshore wind farm. DNV was initially appointed for the full design assessment of the windfarm’s turbines and the offshore substations. During the design assessment, DNV delivered the conformity statements for the basic design of the wind turbines and support structures. DNV is working on the detailed design of both offshore transformer station and turbine and support structures. Further DNV is contracted to cover the inspection services of manufacturing, transport & installation and commissioning surveillance to take the wind farm into operation.

With 16 German wind farms currently in operation or under construction, Arkona marks the 14th offshore wind farm in Germany alone for which DNV performs its certification services.

Benefits
The stringent inspections are established to ensure that the assumptions made in the design assessment phase are validated while construction of the wind farm and thus support the goal to provide optimal reliability for the entirety of all assets during the project lifetime.
