Pioneering the next-generation advancements in subsea flexible pipe technologies, our joint industry projects (JIPs) delve deep into inspection tools, life expectancy predictions under CO2-SCC conditions, and tensile armour wire testing in CO2-SCC settings.

Development of field inspection tool for flexible pipes

A groundbreaking JIP seeks to enhance riser system integrity management by establishing best practices for field inspections. Addressing the alarming rate of conventional flexible pipe failures, this JIP aims to qualify a specific non-destructive testing (NDT) technique and develop an ROV-ready solution. Organized in three phases, the project will first undertake a literature review and onshore testing, followed by offshore testing, and finally culminate in in-field inspections. By the project's end, a comprehensive guideline will be formed, setting the standard for future subsea NDT techniques.

Project timeline
The estimated duration of this full project is 36 months, expected to start in 2024. Phase I has an estimated duration of 6 months. Phase II has an estimated duration of 12 months. Phase III has an estimated duration of 18 months.



Lifetime prediction for flexible pipes under CO2-SCC conditions

With a rise in instances of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) on pressure and armour wires in high CO2 service pipelines, this JIP sets out to devise a probabilistic model. By merging DNV's recent developments in external crack growth rate predictions with fresh research, this project aims to determine a safe operational window for pipes in CO2-rich atmospheres. Through combined crack propagation tests and model development, the industry will gain clarity on flexible pipe lifetimes under CO2-SCC conditions.

Small-scale testing qualification for tensile armour wires in CO2-SCC environments

This JIP undertakes a methodical approach to establish a robust test matrix for tensile armour wires' susceptibility to CO2-SCC in flexible pipelines. Drawing from DNV's extensive research, the project aims to craft a detailed guideline for small-scale testing. This initiative will fortify the industry's understanding of material behaviour, heighten the safety measures of flexible pipes in CO2 environments, and aid in managing CO2-SCC risks comprehensively.
