Laboratory+task+risk+assessment+

Accidents can occur when carrying out simple, daily tasks within the laboratory. Workers can face many hazards on a daily basis from chemicals, radioactivity, physical hazards (eg, trips hazards, heavy objects), electricity, and of course biological agents themselves. Training in task risk assessment is an essential part of biosafety management in the laboratory.

Course introduction
This course helps you to understand how to carry out a task risk assessment in your laboratory. Our generic approach can be applied to any task, such as an experimental procedure (eg, the cultivation of a biological agent) or the use of equipment (eg, BSC, centrifuge).

The methodology uses an all hazards approach and can also identify risks associated with the use of chemicals, radioactivity, animal work, etc. Although safety is the main focus, the use of multiple consequence categories ensures all risks types are included which can affect the organisation (eg, environment, compliance, etc.).

Who should attend
The course is designed for personnel who will take part in risk assessments, either as facilitators / recorders managers with responsibility for laboratory work. Those who should attend will include:
• Laboratory Managers
• Principal Investigators
• Laboratory Workers
• Biological Safety Officers
• Occupational Health and Safety Professionals
• Safety Committee Members
• Regulators

Course outline
• Risk assessment principles
• The task risk assessment process
• Planning and preparation
• Hazard identification
• Evaluation of risks and control options
• Communication and reporting
• Tools; templates, biorisk matrix

During the course participants will be trained in the task risk assessment process and shown software tools used in assessments. Exercises and case studies will be used to illustrate principles in a practical and applied manner.

Benefits
The benefits of task risk training for your laboratory include:
• Developing a structured and transparent process for management of task risk
• Demonstrating responsible management of risk
• Helping to keep your people safe and secure
