This summer, DNV Software successfully delivered Phase 2 of the DSEC Design Management System. This is a software solution for project planning and follow up, managing all drawings and design activities related to DSEC’s ship design projects. With more than 180 ship designers using the system on a daily basis, it has become a vital part of DSEC’s work process.

DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), is a shipbuilding engineering company with around 600 engineers supplying ship design, design-oriented procurement, production consulting and inspection to shipyards worldwide. For the ship design process system of DSEC, DNV Software carried out Phase 1 of a pilot implementation project from April to September 2006.
In August 2008, we delivered Phase 2 of the complete solution, the aim of which is to provide DSEC with a ship design engineering anagement system covering all its design programs, documents and resources.
The design programs for detail, vendor and production design contain more than 3,000 drawings altogether. For detail design, around 350 drawings are involved including interdependencies with respect to both time and drawing information. A business process template (list of activity) is associated with each drawing, adding up to more than 3,500 activities to manage within a single project. The main requirement of DSEC is to be able to share the progress of design programs and provide each person’s work list with notification through this system.
In addition to the project planning and monitoring, the solution includes seamless integration of all project documents – e.g. letters, faxes, e-mails, comments, and revision reports. Separate modules for load analysis, outside order and payment management are also included.
Phase 2 of the Yard Package was delivered to DSEC in August 2008. From left: Joon Sup Shin, executive vice president of DSEC; Jong Sik Shin, project director DNV Software Korea; Gi Eun Kim, team leader Technical Administration DSEC, and Vebjørn J. Guttormsen, regional manager DNV Software Korea and Japan.
Phase 2 was developed in close cooperation with key personnel at DSEC to ensure a delivery covering its requirements for such a comprehensive system. Says Vebjørn J. Guttormsen, regional manager DNV Software Korea and Japan, “I am pleased that we managed to deliver a system according to specifications and on time to DSEC, offering a state-of-theart environment for good business performance, quality control and project management.”
In September 2008, managing director of DNV Software Elling Rishoff and head of Software Factory Espen Wøien visited DSEC to see the system in daily use. During their stay, they visited major Korean yards to give an update on the Yard Package. Feedback from the yards is very positive, showing the great potential for the functionality offered by our Yard Package to improve their business performance.
Over the past 30 years, the Republic of Korea has emerged as a world-leading shipbuilding nation. In 2005, the country produced 44 per cent of the world’s commercial ship tonnage. Korea’s highly skilled engineers have produced some of the world’s most advanced ship designs in a highly efficient manner. However, competition from emerging low-cost shipbuilding nations such as China and Vietnam will force Korean shipyards to become even more efficient.
Says Elling Rishoff: “Our yard solution offers a way to capture and spread Best Engineering Practice throughout the organisation, as well as effective collaboration with external partners. We are confident that this will be an important factor for Korea to remain a leading shipbuilding nation.”
