With the large number of Safeti customers in the Middle East and North Africa, DNV Software has been very active in this region during the past few months - both supplying training and attending a number of key process idustry conferences.

In October 2007 Henk Witlox, one of our most experienced modelling experts, visited Qatar Petroleum to provide Phast Risk training to staff from several departments. This was held at the QP Training Centre at Doha. The first three days followed the standard Phast Risk course agenda with the final day customised to focus on some problems of specific interest. The course was very well received by the 13 delegates, one of whom followed up his training by attending the public advanced Phast training in London in January this year.
In November, Peter Moore from Safeti Technical Support provided training to eight engineers at BAPCO in Bahrain, a long-standing Phast user. “This was a very lively and knowledgeable group of trainees, most with many years of experience in the industry, who were looking for practical applications of the software and asked all the right questions” says Peter.
From BAPCO’s perspective, this was an extremely useful course; the company is looking forward to utilising the software to support several risk-based decisions that require its immediate attention. The overall feedback from the attendees was very positive. “Peter is an extremely capable teacher who navigates you very skillfully through the many options that Phast offers. The onus is now on us to build on the knowledge base that we have acquired through this hands-on exposure to Phast,” comments Ram Goyal, BAPCO’s Advisor in Risk Management and leader of its Central Reliability Engineering group.
In April, Peter was again in the region, visiting Engineering for the Petroleum and Process Industries (Enppi) in Egypt to provide Phast Risk training to ten engineers from the Safety and Loss Preventions Department.
Enppi is a multi-disciplinary engineering contracting company with headquarters in Cairo and offices throughout the Middle East. It provides integrated engineering, procurement, construction and project management services to the petroleum, petrochemical, power and related industries.
The Enppi trainees, with extensive experience in QRA, quickly picked up the concepts in the standard training. This enabled them to move on to their main area of interest; QRA of long pipes containing petrochemicals.
