DNV Software has served the maritime, offshore and process industries in the region of Greater China for many years. Our main brand products - Nauticus, Sesam and Safeti - have earned a formidable reputation in the market, enabling us to build an extensive customer base over the years.
DNV Software officially established its Greater China presence on 1 March 2005, when the office in Shanghai was opened. The Greater China geographic region also covers Kazakhstan, India, Vietnam, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The initiative was intended to get closer to the customers and better serve the rapidly growing markets. “DNV Software’s strategy in China is twofold,” says managing director Elling Rishoff. “We want to get closer to what is going to be the biggest market for our products. And the large growth for DNV Software means that we wish to use the talent existing in China in our production.”
“After the first three years, DNV Software has become a unit in Greater China with complete function that runs through the entire process from software development, marketing and sales to support,” says Stone Zhang, regional manager for DNV Software Greater China. “The staff has increased from only two persons to the current 27, including the acquisition of Taiwan-based software company Primalux in 2005 and the newly established software development centre in Shanghai in 2008.”
WE do! DNV Software expands greatly in China to better serve the needs of Chinese customers.
“The growth DNV Software has achieved in Greater China is amazing,” comments DNV area chair for Greater China, Bjørn K. Haugland, who has witnessed DNV Software’s explosive growth in the past three years. Region Greater China has been one of the most important strategic development regions within DNV.” As part of DNV Software’s strategy to build up DNV Software Greater China, a software development centre was officially established in Shanghai on 1 January this year, in addition to the centres in Norway and the UK. “The reason for establishing the software development centre in Shanghai was to be closer to and better serve the Chinese market by providing tailor-made software solutions to the maritime, offshore and process industries,” says Tormod Svensen, head of DNV Software Solutions Greater China. “Of course, we also provide solutions to the global market.”
Customer service and technical support
DNV Software is proud to deliver products and solutions that help its customers manage risk in all phases of the asset life cycle in maritime, offshore and process industries, and proud to be a major contributor to the DNV business at large. Since starting in this region, DNV Software has been offering a wide range of training programmes as well as organising user meetings with the objective of helping local customers establish best engineering practice. DNV Software has an extensive customer base in the region, which includes shipyards, owners, design institutes, offshore engineering companies, oil companies, upstream and downstream process companies, and universities. There is an increasing demand for DNV’s innovative software products and solutions as China is rapidly climbing the technology ladder.
Maritime industry
The Nauticus software has an important role in helping the Chinese shipbuilding industry improve. While Chinese shipbuilding has long concentrated on devel-oping standard ship designs, the current trend is to develop significantly larger ships such as ultra large container carriers and very large crude oil carriers.
Offshore industry
A central issue for novel ship design is the need for direct assessment of hydro - dynamic loads, motions and structural strength. DNV Software’s world-leading tools are in need.
Process industry
As with the increasing awareness of environmental protection and risk management, the Safeti software is in high demand in the market. Safeti incorporates the international industry standard for consequence modelling. To quantify the risk associated with the release of hazardous chemicals, accident scenarios are analysed, taking into account the local population, land usage and weather conditions. In this way major risk contributors aare identified and mitigated, thereby avoiding serious accidents.
Asset integrity management
In 2007, DNV president and CEO Henrik O. Madsen signed a Memo of Understanding with Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) for providing Orbit+ software to the PetroChina Liaoyang pilot project. PetroChina will use its Liaoyang plant for evaluating Orbit+ as its future asset management system. The agreement was a result of BUCT and DNV Software jointly winning the pilot project in competition with a local software vendor. The Orbit+ software from DNV is a comprehensive asset integrity management system for inspection and maintenance of process plants. Orbit+ assists plant operators in optimising resource usage without compromising safety and availability. It integrates with DNV’s Risk Based Inspection (RBI) tools and provides support in Mandarin and English.
Adding more value to the customers
“A close cooperation with other DNV business areas is key to serve our local customers better,” says Ketil Aamnes, global sales and marketing director in DNV Software. “As a leading software and solutions provider in the maritime, offshore and process industries, DNV Software is providing added value to DNV customers.”
DNV Software has been working very closely with DNV Maritime and DNV Energy to provide comprehensive solutions to address the key challenges facing the Chinese maritime and energy industries. DNV Software is working together with DNV Maritime on developing the Nauticus Production System to support the dual class scheme of China Classification Society and DNV. Looking ahead, DNV Software Greater China will continue its swift development in the region.
