Our software selection process consisted of in-depth analyses of the capabilities of each package, analyses of the case studies provided by the different vendors and direct, ‘hands-on’ product evaluations through temporary evaluation licenses. Among the various commercial software packages available worldwide, it was clear to us that Sesam was the best choice.
CGGVeritas, as a market leader in the field of seismic acquisition, is strongly committed to research and development in order to be at the forefront of technologies. In the Technology R&D Department of the Marine Product Line, we are designing the future generation of offshore acquisition equipment. The floating systems towed behind seismic vessels are complex to model, as they are composed of very long and slender components linked with larger-shaped mechanical components. For feasibility studies and the preliminary design of new concepts, we needed a global software package allowing hydrodynamic calculation of flexible lines and bodies combined with structural stress and deformations calculation. We were looking for an integrated package to save time on file exchange between the various programs. In addition, for subsequent detailed analyses of selected concepts, we needed software tools with high capabilities in geometric modelling, meshing, and calculation algorithms.
We chose the Sesam package for the numerical analysis of our floating systems both for the quality of its individual software modules and its modular design. This modularity makes it possible to tailor the package to fit our needs, even if they change over time. In fact, DNV Software provides us with the appropriate combination of modules that is perfectly in line with our requirements. The use of an interface file system combined with the conceptual modelling approach adds strength to the package, helping us save precious time.
On a final note, the training courses provided by DNV Software in Oslo are very useful for getting off to a quick start, and the availability of their hotline support is excellent. I would also give a top rating to the documentation (theory and user’s manuals).
