“Sesam will be an important implement of our own-developed codes and experiment facilities, helping us to take the challenges in the developing market of ocean engineering in China,” says Zhu Dexiang, Vice Director of China Ship Scientific Research Centre (CSSRC). “Now we are looking forward to more close cooperation with DNV in research and innovation on ship and offshore technology.”

The software package for Sesam Floating Structures – consisting of GeniE, HydroD and DeepC – is the world-leading software solution for design and verification of floating offshore structures in deep sea. The package offers hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and coupled analysis, as well as structural strength, buckling and fatigue assessment for various floating offshore structures in deep sea. Seamless communication between different modules in the Sesam system ensures high efficiency and quality within the integrated design loop.
CSSRC is a unique scientific research institute, founded in 1951. CSSRC engages mainly in the specialised and applied fundamental researches on hydrodynamics and structural mechanics with respect to ships and offshore structures. Gu Miao Xiang of CSSRC led systematic research on ocean engineering as early as the 1980s. This research included theoretical and experimental investigation on hydrodynamic characteristics of offshore floating structures such as TLPs and semisubmersibles, as well as fatigue reliability of tubular joints of offshore structures.
With the most comprehensive experiment facilities of ocean engineering in Asia, and highly qualified scientific and technical staff, CSSRC offers services in R&D, model experimentation and consultation in concept design for various floating offshore structures. With the demand from the Chinese offshore oil and gas industry to move into deep waters, the main energy companies, design and research institutes, as well as the big shipyards, are coming together to build competence. A new concept for an oil production system suitable for 1500m deep water of South China Sea is under development. With the state-of-the-art software solution and technology and local technical support service, DNV Software is now helping various players in such campaigns taking place in China. Previous to CSSRC, several strategic research and design units have chosen Sesam in China, among them:
- China Classification Society (CCS)
- CNOOC Engineering Ltd.
- CNOOC Research Centre
- CNPC Liaohe Petroleum
- Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC)
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University
