The market calls for a more proactive and transparent approach to handling environmental issues. Shipping is exposed to a new reality and needs to act now.

At a DNV press conference at Nor-Shipping, Tor E. Svensen, Chief Operating Officer of DNV Maritime, emphasised this need for action, and added: “Society at large has sharpened its environmental focus dramatically over the past few years. Authorities and regulators have followed this up by predicting new regulations. Although transportation by ship is far more efficient and causes less emissions than the alternatives, the shipping industry will have to pay much more attention to the environment in the future than it does today.”

Environmental Performance System (EPS)
To support this industry’s decision making processes, DNV Software is offering its Environmental Performance System (EPS) to the market. The EPS application is a commercial and stand-alone application aiming at supporting corporations in tracking and reporting environmental effects of their operations.

EPS is a web-based reporting tool supporting the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and ISO 14001. It is delivered through an Application Service Provider (APS) service, hosted from our data centre at Høvik. DNV’s knowledge and services in this area ccombined with DNV Software’s Environmental Performance System (EPS) will strengthen DNV’s offerings to our clients and help them put their environmental commitment into action.

EPS can accommodate useful information including:

  • Cost-effectively collect, process, store and report environmental information
  • Continuously follow-up and measure the environmental performance in a flexible way according to defined hierarchy or throughout the fleet
  • Benchmark and profile environmental performance, internally and externally
  • Administration of users, organisations, indicators and parameters.

Recently the following contracts were signed:
Fred.Olsen Marine Services signed a contract involving its FPSO and cruise vessel divisions. The contract includes environmental consultancy delivered by Maritime Solutions and Training and hosting services provided by DNV Software.
Fred.Olsen Marine Services is an international ship management company based in Oslo, Norway and involved in technical and marine services to the shipping and offshore industries.

Golar Management, the only shipping company dedicated exclusively to LNG transportation, signed a contract for implementing the solution for its LNG and FSRU fleet of 12 vessels. The company will also be reporting directly onboard sailing vessels without an Internet connection using a mail service.

In addition, DNV has chosen to implement EPS for the corporate SHE reporting from 2008. This contract was signed in August.

Says Knut Helle, responsible for marketing and sales of this product: “We are experiencing a significant increase in inquiries for solutions like EPS, particularly from the marine industry. With the focus on the environment in society today, we are expecting to provide this service to an increased number of customers from various industry segments.”
