“In recent years, Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry and DNV have been working together in developing the tanker designs,” says Tore Jacobsen, District Manager for DNV Maritime Greater China. “Since last autumn, the cooperation has resulted in newbuilding orders for several tankers – four VLCCs for CSC Nanjing Tanker, two VLCCs for BW Shipping Managers, and two Suezmax tankers for Fred. Olsen.

“The design of BW VLCC was the first design in the world to meet the new CSR tanker requirements,” says Jacobsen, who has kept close ties with Bohai over the past years. He is now in close contact with the yard to coordinate approval, which will be carried out at the DNV Maritime Service Centre in Shanghai.

To further strengthen cooperation, the top management of the yard paid a visit to DNV’s head office at Høvik, Norway. The purpose of the visit was to meet the top management and to further discuss possible areas of cooperation within maritime innovation, software packages and training. The top-level communication demonstrates the close relationship with the Chinese shipbuilding industry.

Since 2005, DNV Software and DNV Maritime have arranged a set of CSR seminars and Nauticus software training courses in Shanghai, Dalian, and Guangzhou. “The Nauticus Hull package provides full support of IACS’ Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Tankers as well as DNV’s 1A1 rules,” says Øystein Goksøyr, Regional Manager for DNV Software Greater China. “With our marketleading software and comprehensive technical services, we are glad to support the Chinese shipbuilding industry in implementing the IACS Common Structural Rules.”
