The four-day course included detailed presentation of the new rules, followed by hands-on training on rule scantling analysis, fatigue analysis and finite element cargo hold analysis in Nauticus Hull. Extra focus was put on results analysis and comparison between the new and old hull rules.

“DNV has played a central role in the development of the Common Structural Rules, and we are now scaling up our operations in China to help our clients implement the rules for their upcoming hull development projects,” says Bjørn K.Haugland, Regional Manager for DNV Maritime Greater China.

Nauticus Hull has been continuously developed for the Common Structural Rules since the Joint Tanker Project (JTP) was started by DNV, Lloyds and ABS in 2002. The software has been frequently used for testing, development and calibration or the new rules. This has put the product in a good position compared to competition. As an example, the Korean Yard Association recently decided to use Nauticus Hull exclusively to finish their evaluation of the rules.

Says Øystein Goksøyr, Regional Manager for DNV Software in Greater China: “Nauticus Hull’s modern software platform enables us to deliver front-end software for the new rules way ahead of our competitors. We are now implementing the Joint Bulk Project (JBP) rules in our software, and aim at delivering full CSR support for the Chinese shipbuilding industry when the new rules come into force on 1 April 2006.”

Delegates from 21 companies attended the training, which was hosted at the DNV Academy in Shanghai and Dalian, 11–14 and 25–28 October respectively. Feedback from the course participants was very positive, and the ship designers expressed great interest in learning more about the new rules and software.
