New+Nauticus+release+including+rules+for+double+hull+oil+tankers

The Nauticus March 2005 CD provides users with important new functionality and enhancements for ship design, analysis and verification. In this release we have also included support for the common rules for double hull oil tankers, 2nd draft, developed in co-operation between the three Class Societies DNV, ABS and LR.

Common rules for double hull oil tankers
When the new rules come into force they will require more extensive analysis and therefore effective software tools will be essential. DNV Software is pleased to present what we believe to be the most comprehensive tools and best support for the new rules.

Until the new rules are implemented, this new version of Nauticus Hull will make it possible for ship designers and yards to evaluate the rules and their consequences for new tanker designs.

Implementation of the rules has been made throughout the Nauticus Hull suite. Users will find new functionality in the 3D Concept Modeler of Nauticus Hull, Section Scantlings, Fatigue and Buckling Check programs.

The software has been tested extensively against the new rules.

PULS Buckling Code
PULS (Panel Ultimate Limit State) is a computerised buckling code based on advanced mathematical models. In Nauticus Hull this new code has been implemented through an intuitive user interface. The new program, PULS Advanced Viewer, provides easy access to 3D graphics of different results like buckling modes, redistributed stress patterns etc. and provides for a thorough understanding of the physical behaviour of non-linear buckling response.

The PULS code is incorporated in the new common rules for tankers, and Nauticus Hull now supports automatic buckling control in accordance with the code. PULS Buckling check is also available from within Section Scantlings as an integrated and documented part of the rules scantling report.

A separate spreadsheet solution that will help users to optimise panels with respect to buckling is now included in the Rule Check package.

Automatic Buckling Check (ABC)
The ABC program supports DNV rules as well as the new common tanker rules based on the PULS code.

The ABC program has been re-developed and now provides advanced buckling check directly on the concept model for longitudinal- AND transverse structures based on finite element analysis results.

Reports from the buckling check can be reported in several formats including a PULS Excel solution and the PULS advanced viewer.

The ABC program supports DNV rules as well as the new common tanker rules based on the PULS code.

Fatigue
The Fatigue program has been completely redeveloped into a more user-friendly and effective tool supporting simplified fatigue calculations for ships and FPSOs according to DNV’s rules and also in compliance with the new common rules for double hull tankers.

The new version of the program is fully integrated with Section Scantlings. Geometry information and structural data such as stiffener data, stiffener connection data, brackets and pressure loads are all input in the Section Scantlings program and used directly by the Fatigue analysis. As a result of this, user interaction is reduced to a minimum and results are presented in a better way than before.

3D Beam
A number of enhancements have also been introduced to 3D Beam. One important new feature is the ability to communicate data from 3D Beam to GeniE which will make it possible to bring models used for initial or more basic calculations into a more advanced analysis environment based on the full suite of available SESAM programs.

Open solutions
The new version of the Nauticus Hull products is much more open than its predecessor. Reports from Section Scantlings can now be exported to Excel and Word thus ensuring more flexibility in the creation of reports and integration with in-house calculation tools.

The latest version of Nauticus Hull also provides a choice with respect to use of alternative finite element analysis tools. Previous versions of Nauticus Hull performed an idealisation to Patran-Pre, the SESAM preference of Patran. With the latest version it will be possible to also output data to MSC’s standard Patran with a NASTRAN preference.

Capacity checks for buckling in the Nauticus ABC program can be performed based on results generated by Sestra and through translation and import of NASTRAN FEA results.

Licence
Most of the new programs and enhancements described above will be available within customer maintenance or lease agreements. However, some of the new programs must be acquired separately. Import and export of data from NASTRAN and the PULS Advanced Viewer both require additional licences.
