About 50 software users from major shipyards, universities and institutes in Korea and Japan attended the Sesam workshop in Korea. Positive responses and synergy effects from last years workshop encouraged us to take the opportunity to meet with our customers again this year, and to ensure that our new organisation and development plans continue to meet the market expectations.
The “DNV Software User Workshop - Sesam - Korea 2010” was held at the Paradise Hotel in Busan from 10-11 June where the participants were welcomed by the DNV Software Korea & Japan Area Manager, Jong Sik Shin. Are Føllesdal Tjønn, Managing Director DNV Software, followed by with a keynote speech where he outlined our new organisation, strategy, market situation and the importance of the Sesam user workshop in Korea.

Sesam software being the main focus for this event, the 'Sesam 40 years' video served as good starter before the latest news, updates, and future plans for the Sesam software products were covered. The true power of concept modeling and scripting were demonstrated, with examples on parametric hull form modeling and automatic conversions from a beam to a shell model.
Encouraged by the continued support from our software users and increased attendance from last year, we put a lot of effort in providing an interesting agenda, with interactive sessions and high quality presentations from both internal and external speakers. We shared our best engineering practices and experiences within the offshore industry, by interesting presentations followed by in-depth discussions with all participants in four major sessions with main focus on:
Hydrodynamic and Structural Analysis
- Sesam used for Semi-submersible Rig Design - Part 2, presented by SHI
- Application of HydroD in Mobile Harbor, presented by STXOptimum Design Aspects
- Comparison of DNV Buckling Check Formulas and Corresponding Optimal Scantlings, presented by SHI
- Maros for RAM Analysis, presented by DNV SoftwareSpecial Features in Sesam
- Generating Hull Form using Offset Data from NAPA by ACEA
- Yield and Code Checking of Plates, presented by DNV SoftwareProgressive Collapse Analysis
- Failure Analysis of Offshore Structures subject to Elevated Temperature due to Fire, presented by PNU
- Topside Blast Analysis using Usfos, presented by HHI
“I am deeply impressed with the attention from our users and the quality of the presentations. Even though it is my first time to visit Korea, I can see the possibilities and potential in the offshore market in the future," says Are Føllesdal Tjønn, Managing Director DNV Software.
This Sesam user workshop turned out to be an efficient way of interacting with our existing and potential customers. The participants showed great interests in the products relevant for their projects and DNV Software received not only valuable feedback, but also request for quote during the workshop.
Even though the offshore market in Asia is busier than ever, Sesam users from major shipyards invested time in participating. This encourages us to strive even more to make sure that our client’s investment in Sesam is the right decision for them to get their job properly done, both now and in the future.

In the evening of the first day, our guests were treated at a traditional Korean restaurant where we not only enjoyed dinner but also had the chance to have interesting formal and informal discussions.
We deeply appreciate the engagement shown by all the participants and look forward to seeing all of you at the next Sesam User Workshop in Korea in 2011!
