The visit was the result of the business DNV Software has carried out together with DSME and DSEC over the past two years in Korea. During this period, DNV Software has succeeded in selling in and providing solutions supporting the yard engineering work processes aiming at making Korean ship designers work more effectively and with higher quality.

During the three day meeting, DNV Software presented their latest innovations and technologies supporting the yard’s work processes, presented in the form of the DNV Software Yard Strategy.
The strategy consists of the following components/products:

  • Outline specification (Nauticus Tendersuite)
  • Project Planning & Execution (Brix Project Manager)
  • Drawing creation (Nauticus Early Design)
  • Drawing storage (Brix Document Services)
  • Class Rules (Nauticus Rule Check)
  • Hydro dynamics (Nauticus Wave loading)
  • Machinery calculation (Nauticus Machinery)
  • Drawing distribution (Brix Workflow and DNV Exchange e-approval)
  • Strength Assessment (Nauticus Hull)
  • Digital Collaboration (Brix Workflow)

“DNV Software believes that next generation Ship Yard enterprise architecture will be loosely coupled. We are very priviliged to be able to work out the next generation solutions together with world class shipbuilders” says Elling Rishoff, Managing Director DNV Software.

Ole Christian Astrup, Project Director DNV Software Korea, presenting the lessons learned from the Brix projects in Korea.

The parties also exchanged their experiences so far in working together on implementing best engineering practices for the shipbuilding industry. Despite of cultural differences and the large geographical distance between Oslo and Korea, the co-operation has worked out very well. DNV Software will soon complete the final project deliverables at both DSME and DSEC. At DSME, Brix Workflow will support the daily engineering production in three different Departments involving more than 200 users.

DSME will enter a 6 month consolidation period with the objective to fully exploit the potential for improved organisational learning, efficiency and quality which the delivered solutions offer. This involves training of end users, development of new procedures and making “dead” knowledge readily available as part of the new system in the form of guidelines, calculation templates, template documents etc. After the consolidation period, DSME will summarise their experience and lessons learned. Based on this evaluation, DSME will decide on how to expand the Brix Foundation further into it’s organisation.

Vice President G.S. Lee summarised the three day meeting by saying: The presentations by DNV Software have shown to DSME that DNV possesses both the technology and the knowledge which will be of value to Korean Shipyards. DSME needs to thoroughly consider how the shipyard can utilise some of this technology and knowledge in order to be best prepared for the future. This is especially true within the fields of Early Design utilising full 3D models and within the field of Quantitative Risk Assessment.

DSEC already plans to expand the current development into a second phase were the objective is to fully integrate the Engineering Management System into their current production environment:

“Brix offers a way for DSEC to standardise our engineering work
and design projects throughout our organisation.”

Mr J.S. Shin, DSEC

During the visit, DNV Software further strengthened the bonds with DSME and DSEC by signing agreements and letter of intent for product purchase and software solution development.

Henrik Madsen, CEO of DNV, visited on the second day of the meeting further underlining the good co-operation between DSME and DNV going back more than 30 years.
