Purpose

The purpose of field examinations is to enable examination of stationary components and materials that can not easily be moved to the laboratory.

Benefits

This service will give the client the possibility to perform in situ failure investigation and material characterisation.

Features

DNV has the field equipment required to perform plastic replica for metallographic examination, in field optical microscope, hardness measurements, milling of chips for chemical analysis, cutting of boat samples for further examination in the a laboratory, chemical analysis in field (spectrograph) and residual stress measurements.

The service is offered as a stand-alone service, but is very often used in combination with failure analyses, "trouble-shooting" assignments or condition assessments.

These techniques are valuable alternatives or supplements when:

  • Cutting of samples are not allowed or feasible
  • Large areas are to be examined, and the structure is too large to be transported or handled in the laboratory
  • The equipment is still in operation and a shut-down is impossible or too costly.
