The July 2002 edition of the Rules for Classification of Ships contains revised versions of the following rule chapters:

Pt.0 Ch.1 User Information, Amendments and Indexes
Pt.7 Ch.1 General Requirements
Pt.7 Ch.2 Periodical Survey Requirements
Pt.7 Ch.8 Machinery Survey Arrangements

In addition, some of the rule chapters have been subject to amendments, which have been inserted in Sec.3 of Pt.0 Ch.1.

Important rule changes
The rule changes covered by the revised chapters or Sec.3 of Pt.0 Ch.1 are as follows:

Pt.1 Ch.1 Sec.3 General Regulations - Classification Procedure
The changes in the rules for ships in operation described below have some consequences for the classification procedure. The appropriate changes have been made in Sec.3.

Pt.7 Ships in Operation
In order to obtain a uniform and simplified system for class survey systematics, the rules for ships in operation Pt.7 Ch.1, Pt.7 Ch.2 and Pt.7 Ch.8 have been restructured and partly revised, with respect to the following main issues:

  • Restructuring of content.

  • Consistency of survey intervals and windows.

  • The structure of survey requirements related to main class.

  • The requirements for survey arrangement are clearly defined.

  • Survey and certificate endorsements.

  • Amendments to include new IACS Unified Requirements.

  • Alignment with the development of the Nauticus product model.

Pt.7 Ch.1, Pt.7 Ch.2 and Pt.7 Ch.8 have been restructured as follows:,

  • Pt.7 Ch.1 contains general survey requirements for ships in operation.

  • Pt.7 Ch.2 contains survey requirements related to each periodical survey.

  • Pt.7 Ch.8 contains requirements related to survey arrangements for machinery.

The changes came into force 1 July 2002.

Pt.7 Ch.1 General Requirements and Pt.7 Ch.2 Periodical Survey Requirements

  • Convention survey requirements have been clarified.

  • Conditions for certificate endorsements have been defined.
(Certificates are not to be endorsed if surveys/CCs are overdue)

  • Suspension of voluntary additional class notations by the attending surveyor.

  • Survey intervals have been adjusted and harmonized.

  • The class notation 1A2 has been removed and "novel design" has been introduced.

  • New IACS Unified Requirements coming into force 1 July 2002 have been included.

  • The survey systematics has been aligned with the Nauticus development.

Pt.7 Ch.8 Machinery Survey Arrangements
Recent work undertaken on how to increase the quality of machinery surveys reveals that the survey arrangements offered for machinery today are unclear to both customers and surveyors. This is mainly due to inconsistency in the rule requirements and following that, the rules have been revised. The following basic philosophies have been identified and defined.

  1. All machinery survey arrangements have been based on the same machinery inventory list.

  2. Every machinery survey arrangement has been described in the same chapter with the same structure in the rules.

  3. The name of a survey arrangement should be as descriptive as possible, and all the machinery survey arrangements have a connection in the naming (e.g. one common "family" name).

  4. Machinery survey arrangements linked to the owner or technical manager of the ships have been changed to a survey arrangement and not a class notation.

Other changes

  • Tailshaft monitoring (TMON) has been defined to be a class notation.

  • It has been made mandatory to have all E0 items included in machinery PMS for ships with the E0 class notation.

The rules for Nauticus(Propulsion) and Machinery CBM have been removed.
