While the United Nations (UN) is chiefly recognized for its efforts to resolve conflicts and manage the distribution of international aid, representatives have also worked hard to establish international standards to avoid confusion between nations.

Part of this work includes drafting resolutions to make sure all nations refer to regions by the same name. For example, the body of water that separates Saudi Arabia and Iran is now referred to as the Persian Gulf, not to be confused with the Arabian Sea, which feeds the Gulf.
