DNV has been formally authorised to act as a Recognised Security Organisation on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Directorate.

As a consequence of the new International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, DNV has been authorised by seven flag states, including Norway, to act as a Recognised Security Organisation (RSO) on their behalf.

Says DNV's Finn Tellsgård: "Following the December introduction of the ISPS Code, to become effective July 2004, DNV has been seeking recognition as a RSO from over 100 flag states. So far, we have received this authorisation from seven flag states. Together, these flag states cover about 30% of the DNV classed fleet. "

Being an RSO entails checking a vessel's compliance with ship security plans on behalf of flag states. The International Chamber of Shipping has estimated that 55,000 ships will need security certificates, leaving about 75.000 ship security officers needing training by the July 2004 deadline.

DNV is currently training over 100 surveyors in order to help its customers meet the deadline.
