The paper reveals that CGS (CO2 Geologic Storage) technology is by no means fail-proof or risk-free, but carefully selected and qualified storage sites that are operated according to effective regulatory supervision should be safe. The key will be to apply fit-for-purpose risk management throughout the lifecycle of the storage sites, starting from screening, and continuing through site selection, qualification, injection operations, and, finally, closure.
For CO2 capture to be effective, the CO2 must be effectively stored for a very long period of time. The question everyone is asking: will the CO2 storage be safe? This position paper attempts to answer this question.
