“The selection of Hamburg as the location of this key appointment reflects DNV’s close co-operation with German shipowners and DNV’s desire to foster stronger relationships with industry leaders around the globe,” says Tor Svensen DNV president.

This new appointment comes at a time when many shipowners are looking for operational and technical innovation to move them beyond the difficult market conditions of the past few years.

“The container market continues to evolve and we see post-financial-crisis business taking on a new, more dynamic character as the domestic markets in China, India and south-east Asia mature. At DNV, we are flexible and dynamic and ready to take a leading role wherever the action is,” says Jost Bergmann. “Currently, around 35 per cent of the world’s container fleet is German owned so I am here to listen to our customers.”

“In a move aimed at helping shipowners reduce operating costs, DNV has already been able to offer extended drydocking intervals of up to 7.5 years and Mr Bergmann believes initiatives such as this demonstrate DNV’s ability to meet the challenges of any market condition. Based on collaborative industry research extending back over five years, it also demonstrates DNV’s long-term vision and commitment,” he says.

DNV has shown environmental leadership in the container ship segment through initiatives such as the development of the fuel-saving Quantum design and the Triple E Environment and Energy Efficiency Rating Scheme and Mr Bergmann intends to maintain this leading position. “I will work closely with shipowners, not just in Europe but throughout the world, to bring further innovation to the industry and to match our priorities ever more closely to theirs.”

“Our success is very much based on team effort and I am confident that we can all work together to enhance the strong and well-functioning global network we already have to further support container operations globally.”

Jost Bergmann is a Naval Architect and worked with the German ship yard “Bremer Vulkan” for six years before joining DNV in 1996. He was based at DNV Head Office for two years before moving to Hamburg where he has been heading the Maritime Service Centre, serving ship owners, ship yards and other customers in Germany.
