DNV has the highest performance factor among class societies in terms of port state control inspection results, according to figures published by the Paris MOU port state regime.
The Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Paris MOU), which covers all European ports, has published a table ranking the performance of classification societies in terms of number of detentions related to certificates issued by the society. The table has been included in the Paris MOU's Annual Report for the first time for 2006. The data is based on thorough analysis of port state control findings over the past three years.
Best method of ranking
“The Paris MOU has published class detention statistics since 1999, but in this table they are not only counting actual inspections and detentions,” explains Niki Mowinckel, coordinator for port state control activities. “The Paris MOU uses the society’s total number of inspections, total number of potential allowed detentions and actual detentions as part of their parameters to end up with a weighted value for its ranking. This makes it the best method of ranking the class societies ever published.”
“Quality throughout the value chain is our main target. Therefore I am pleased to see DNV ranked as the number one class society when it comes to class detention performance,” says Olav Nortun, technical director of DNV Maritime.
Olav Nortun adds, “It is mainly DNV’s customers, the shipowners, that can be proud of these figures. This is primarily a result of their professional focus on maintenance and safety. Secondly it is a result of good cooperation between shipowners and class with a common focus on quality.”
