On 20 December, the first of two 298,000 deadweight-ton VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) built by Dalian was delivered to its Shanghai-based owner, China Shipping Development. This is a part of the China Shipping Group, one of the major shipowners in China.

This is the first VLCC to fly the flag of the People’s Republic of China. The vessel’s name is Xin Jin Yang, which can be translated as New Golden Ocean.

“The construction of the vessel, from steel cutting to delivery, has taken slightly more than 13 months, which is considerably less than VLCCs previously delivered by Chinese yards and shows the increased productivity of Chinese yards,” says project manager Kent-Åge Solem.

“The vessel is dual class DNV/CCS (China Classification Society) and the cooperation between the two societies, the shipowner and the yard has been very good during the construction period. The fact that DNV was chosen as one of the class societies on the project shows DNV’s strong position in China,” says Kent-Åge Solem.

DNV Navigator, a state-of-the-art onboard electronic information system, has been installed on the vessel.
