Speaking at the inaugural meeting DNV Maritime chief operating officer Tor E. Svensen stated that the committee has been established in recognition of the importance of Germany as a shipping centre and consists of 18 leading representatives of the German Shipping Industry.

“The initiative was taken by members of the German National Committee which was formed last year. It is hoped that this new body will further enhance our dialogue with the German Shipping Industry, which is fast becoming a significant market for DNV.”

Prof. Dr. Ing. Stefan Kruger is acting as Chairman. In his opening address he emphasised that DNV’s newly established technical committee is a signal that DNV is furthering its commitment to the German Shipping Industry. “The founding of this new committee clearly shows that DNV is giving the German maritime sector quite a high priority. The new body will serve as an important forum for technical discussions relating to maritime subjects that are key issues for success in our business.”

This sentiment was echoed by DNV’s CEO Miklos Konkoly-Thege, who acknowledged the help from Committee Members in advising the society on how to further enhance the services it is providing to the industry.

The inaugural meeting included presentations from key personnel, covering a range of DNV projects, products and services. For instance, Olav Nortun DNV Maritime’s technical director explained DNV's philosophy on Rule development, while head of MTP Jon Rysst highlighted ongoing developments and coming hearings, and several research projects.

Johan Tutturen, head of DNV’s newbuilding section presented DNV’s state-of-the-art EApproval system, a revolutionary electronic drawing approval service. Age Bøe, project manager on the Joint Tanker Project informed the delegates about the current state of the project.

Fatigue problems on large container ships were also addressed by Knut Døhlie, business director for container ships. He also informed the delegates about DNV’s Container Express service and Active Operating Guidance in relation to parametric rolling.

Olav Nortun technical director of DNV Maritime, and host of the meeting, commented “It’s been a positive, constructive first meeting. In this new body, competent representatives from a major market will be able to advise and make important contributions for the benefit of all parties involved.”
