Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has certified the Skiing World Championships in Italy’s Val di Fiemme in accordance with the ISO 14001 environmental standard. This means that the championships that start on 18 February will be the first Nordic skiing world championships to be environmentally certified. DNV is the leading certification company in Italy, issuing 25% of all ISO certificates awarded to Italian industry.

Sydney, Holmenkollen and Lillehammer too
DNV has been chosen as the certification partner due to the companys global environmental certification experience, and due to its specific experience of certification in connection with sporting events, i.e. the safety of the summer Olympics in Sydney, the Norwegian Skiing Associations activities in the hills surrounding Oslo including events arranged at Holmenkollen and the Holmenkollen Ski Festival - and environmental analyses carried out in connection with the Lillehammer Olympics.
DNV has also done work for Norways Olympiatoppen, developing management systems and routines applicable to top athletes use of food supplements and nutrition. DNV has spent a number of years developing an international standard for doping testing and has been hired by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and under the International Anti-Doping Agreement (IADA) to act as a consultant for doping-testing organisations in several countries.
Hand back in the same condition
Certifying the skiing world championships is important not only for the committee arranging the event but also for the entire valley, which the organisers have undertaken to hand back to the inhabitants in exactly the same condition as when the event started. The aim of the environmental management project is to reduce the events effects on the environment.
During the championships, the air quality in the Fiemme valley will be constantly monitored in order to check on the traffic pollution. Alternative transport to private cars has been arranged in the valley.
DNVs inspectors have ascertained that the environmental standard has been complied with during the organisational phase by carrying out inspections prior to 18 February, and they will follow this work up throughout the championships.
Voluntary environment agreement
The certification takes place through a voluntary environment agreement. This has been prepared in order to promote and increase the use of environmental management systems and environment-friendly products and to assist in the implementation of a local Agenda 21.
This agreement covers the recirculation and use of environment-friendly materials, energy-saving measures, the measurement and reduction of harmful emissions - including radiation from electro-magnetic fields - careful traffic planning and managing the movements of the thousands of people involved in the event.
