Healthcare

Healthcare is becoming increasingly complex making patient safety a growing concern worldwide. Every year between three and sixteen percent of patients admitted to hospital suffer one of more adverse events; of whom a significant number die while others suffer permanent disability. Approximately 40% of the events are considered to be preventable. The Healthcare research programme is committed to promoting patient safety in healthcare systems.

Healthcare is a multidisciplinary research program in DNV with a commitment to contribute to patient safety with its research and evaluation activities.

Our healthcare research programme is multidisciplinary with a commitment to contribute to patient safety through its research and evaluation activities.

Building on our additional extensive expertise in biorisk, we aim to have a significant impact on the patient safety and productivity of healthcare organisations. This we will seek to achieve through mitigation of risk and identification of effective ideas for the improvement of practice.

Through our efforts we will contribute to DNV’s primary purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment. The goal is to become a centre of excellence and an attractive partner in patient safety research, as well as to support DNV’s international ambition to grow its healthcare business (see Healthcare.)

There are four main healthcare research projects currently underway:

Epidemiology of patient harm

The Healthcare research group is partnered with the National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) in the UK to investigate risk management lessons to be learned from clinical negligence claims and identify high risk areas within healthcare delivery.

Infection risk management

Between five and ten percent of patients admitted to hospitals in developed countries acquire an infection during hospitalisation, such as surgical site infections and ventilator associated pneumonia. Together with DNV Healthcare & Biorisk, we are developing a framework for managing infection risk in healthcare settings.

Technology Outlook 2020 Healthcare

DNV’s Research & Innovation unit has a long tradition of publishing Technology Outlook where we look into the crystal ball for selected industries. For the first time in DNV history, we publish Technology Outlook 2020 for the healthcare sector.

Risk management in healthcare

DNV has extensive experience in proactive risk management across many industries. We aim to adapt and implement best practices of DNV risk management into healthcare organisations.
