IRIS+%E2%80%93+Certification

IRIS is a global, mutual system to evaluate management systems within the railway sector. The object is to complement the internationally renowned ISO 9001 with requirements specific to the production of railbound vehicles.

IRIS is a relative of the ISO 9001 standard, but IRIS is specifically designed for the railway industry.

ISO 9001:2008 is too general to apply fully for the railway industry. However, the IRIS standard in conjunction with ISO 9001:2008, defines the business management system requirements specific to the railway industry for the design and development, manufacturing, maintenance and when applicable, installation, customer service of rolling stock and signalling related products.

IRIS covers car bodies, car body fittings, guidance (bogies and running gear), power systems, propulsion, auxiliary systems, braking systems, interiors, on-board vehicle control, passenger information systems, communication systems, cabling and cabinets, door systems, Heating ventilation air condition (HVAC), tilt systems, lighting, couplers.

Deregulation is a challenge
The deregulation of European rail transport has given the rail industry an extra challenge. Increased competition within the EU renders it necessary for railways to have transport systems that can handle requirements from the various countries along the inter-continental lines simultaneously with handling the restrictive EU regulation.

The operating companies expect that the rail suppliers are competitive when solutions for rail vehicles and equipment are needed and also that they shall meet the high quality requirements.

IRIS is the solution
IRIS entails:
• An internationally renowned standard based on the principles of ISO 9001 specifically for the railway industry.
• A mutual web-based information tool
• A harmonised assessment process and a verification tool used by accredited certification companies.

IRIS is on the take-off
The large supplying companies Alstom Transport, AnsaldoBreda, Bombardier Transportation and Siemens Transportation require that more than 1000 of their suppliers are certified according to IRIS by 1 January 2009.
