Legacy DNV has launched a recommended practice (RP) for the entire life cycle of shale gas extraction, based on risk management principles, industry best practices and standards. The objective is for the RP to form the foundation for future development of a globally recognized standard for safe and sustainable shale gas extraction.
The framework was developed over an 18-month period, which included collaboration with stakeholders as well as review of existing practices and guidelines. Multiple organisations have already developed recommendations and guidelines, yet a complete risk management framework has not existed.
DNV GL offers independent verification of existing and planned shale gas activities according to the DNV recommended practice as well as other standards and requirements selected by the operator.
Technology development will also change the shale gas industry over time. It has therefore been considered most appropriate to base the DNV recommended practice on functional requirements that define the main principles required to manage risks instead of prescriptive requirements.
To address widespread concerns about fracking risks, particularly related to contamination of groundwater, DNV GL invites industry and other stakeholders to a joint industry project (JIP). The aim is to collect data, develop and validate quantitative risk assessment methodologies and outline risk management strategies that can be widely accepted by all relevant parties.
DNV GL has launched a comprehensive, tailor-made independent verification service based on the provisions of its Recommended Practice for Risk Management of Shale Gas Developments and Operations (RP), regulatory requirements and other publicly available standards. DNV GL offers the only global, third party verification service with comprehensive coverage of shale operational risks.
