Cargo+Securing+Manual

Introduction

SOLAS Chapter VI and VII requires a Cargo Securing Manual (CS Manual) for all types of ships engaged in the carriage of cargoes other than solid and liquid bulk cargoes. A CS Manual shall be prepared up to a standard at least equivalent to relevant guidelines developed by the Organization, ref. IMO MSC.1/Circ. 1353 - 30 June 2010 (this circular supersedes MSC/Circ. 745). The requirements were implemented 1 January 1998. Having an approved CS Manual is a statutory requirement, which DNV as a class society can approve on behalf of the flag authorities (provided DNV is authorised by the flag authority in question).

Documentation

One copy of the CS Manual is to be kept in our files, hence only one complete copy of the CS Manual need to be submitted together with additional front pages to a local station or DNV Høvik directly. The front pages will be returned in stamped order.

If DNV is not authorized by the flag authority in question, the CS Manual is to be approved by the flag authorities where the vessel is flagged.

CS Manual Template Manuals

DNV provides template manuals free of charge to help those who prepare CS Manual. One general guidance manual is meant to cover all ship types.
This does not mean that all the text is applicable for every ship. Only ship specific relevant information should be included from this manual. Two additional ship specific template manuals for Supply Vessels and for General Cargo Carriers are available.

The template manuals have the following features:

  • Extracts from Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (the CSS Code) as amended, with annexes 1-13, are included
  • Relevant information - such as the IMO Timber Code and parts of DNV Rules - are incorporated, together with figures
  • Calculation formulae and advice is included for the determination of MSL of existing securing equipment
  • Accelerations for L > 30 and B/GM > 4
LASHCON IMO

LASHCON IMO Jan2004 is a MS EXCEL based calculation tool. The program calculates accelerations and balance of forces in semi- and non-standardised lashing arrangements (i.e. cargo units other than containers) in accordance with Annex 13 to the CSS code 2003 edition from IMO. This can be used to provide acceleration tables for various GM-values to be inserted into the CS Manual or to prepare standard lashing arrangements for road vehicles depending on their weight.
