MLC 2006 Facts

New ILO labour standard

- Applicable to most ships

- Mandatory on ships flying the flag of states which have ratified it

- Entry into force when ratified by 30 countries and 33% of world fleet.

- Major Flag States such as Liberia, Marshall Islands, Bahamas, Panama and Norway have already ratified

- Shipowners must develop and implement measures for ongoing compliance with MLC requirements-

- “No more favourable treatment” clause may be imposed on ships from non-ratifying states when entering ports of ratifying states

- Port State areas ready to do Port State Control

- Tonnage requirements already met and estimated entry into force is late 2011/early 2012.
