What shall I do to have my ships and the management company certified?

The ISM Certification is based upon a regime where the Flag State Administration is either doing the certification themselves or authorising Recognised Organisations (ROs) to work on their behalf. Such authorisation may range from full authorisation to do audits and issue certificates, or to do audits only. For some flags a case by case authorisation is required. See Flag State authorisation table for details.

DNV is authorised for all major flags who have decided to authorise ROs. Details regarding DNV’s ISM authorisations and authorisation details for each flag can be found here.

DNV may act as RO for the company and/or ships operated by the company. It will, however, be an advantage to use the same RO for both company and ships. A flow diagram is showing the various main activities by DNV and the Company from agreeing an ISM contract until renewal of the SMC/DOC after 5 years.

Order agreement should be done with your local DNV Company Service Manager (CSM). If such person is not known, the local DNV office should be contacted. Link to DNV directory.

Responsibility for all types of ISM audits is distributed to local DNV offices world wide and the office nearest to the relevant audit port location should be contacted. Link to DNV directory.
