A systematic and cost effective approach to lying-up ships
After a period of tremendous growth, shipping is heading for rougher waters. As freight rates are falling, laying-up vessels for a shorter or longer time period may become an alternative. Recognising the serious situations for our clients in particular and the maritime industry in general, DNV offers a systematic approach on preparation of ships for lay-up and maintaining the ships in a safe and cost effective condition during lay-up. The services assists ship-owners assessing the various issues in laying-up a vessel, such as hot or cold lay-up, location, mooring arrangements, class, insurance, manning, maintenance and inspection.
The services provide a systematic and cost optimal preparation for lay-ups with focus on safe and cost effective maintenance. A well preserved ship during lay-up will ultimately result in reduced re-commissioning time and cost. It should be noted that the listed Lay-up services are not Classification requirements. If the ship is preserved according to DNV’s Lay-up Declaration, this will however be reflected in a reduced re-commissioning scope for DNV classed vessels. DNV’s Declaration on Lay-up acts as a requirement for reduced insurance during lay-up, while the Preservation Declaration may have a positive effect on insurance own risk after recommissioning.
The services are available individually or in the combination best suitable for the actual situation:
DNV’s recommended procedures for lay-up, preservation and re-commissioning of ships are being revised and will be available to the maritime industry as a Guideline shortly
