Role-specific Competence Standards enable the competence of individuals to be assessed through theoretical tests and practical assignments

Assessed individuals receive an assessment report indicating strong and weaker competence areas. Certificates are issued to individuals who pass certification examinations with satisfactory results. The examinations and issue of certificates can be accomplished through a DNV approved test centre.
The following competence standards for certification have been developed in cooperation with the industry and outline competence requirements for given positions.
- No. 3.301 Competence of Ships' Superintendents is intended for individuals ashore, who can be made responsible for providing support to the ship and to facilitate safe and efficient operation of the ship.
- No. 3.302 Competence of Shipboard LNG Cargo Operators is intended for senior officers who shall be able to carry out all tasks related to cargo handling on board LNG carriers.
- No. 3.304 Competence of Ships' Electrical Officers and Engineers is intended for individuals who shall be able to serve as a competent ships' electrician engineer on any type of ship.
- No. 3.305 Competence of Shore-Side Personnel handling Dangerous Goods is intended for shore-side personnel who are supporting vessels transporting dangerous goods at sea.
- No. 3.303 STCW Basic Safety for Seafarers brings together STCW requirements pertaining to basic safety and further breaks them down into competence requirements.
- No. 3.306 Competence of Ships’ Officers for Hull Inspections is intended to provide a core set of competences for inspection.
- No. 3.307 Ship-handling Competence Requirements for Berthing and Un-berthing Large Vessels is aimed at officers that are responsible for berthing and un-berthing large vessels.
- No. 3.310 Competence of Tender Operators is intended for those people who shall operate tenders on board Passenger Ships / Passenger RoRo-ships (Ferries).
- No. 3.312 Competence of Officers for Navigation in Ice is aimed at officers that at times may be responsible for navigating a vessel in cold weather conditions (below 0°C) and/or in ice infested areas.
- No. 3.317 Competence of Shipboard Cargo Operators Crude Oil Tankers is aimed at officers that at times are responsible for liquid bulk cargo operations on board a crude oil tanker.
- No. 3.318 Competence of Shipboard Cargo Operators Product Tankers is aimed at officers that at times are responsible for liquid bulk cargo operations on board a product tanker.
- No. 3.319 Competence of Shipboard Cargo Operators Chemical Tankers is aimed at officers that at times are responsible for liquid bulk cargo operations on board a chemical tanker.
- No. 3.320 Competence of Fast Rescue Boat Operators is intended for those people who shall be in charge of a Fast Rescue Boat.
- No. 3.321 Competence of Lifeboat Coxswains is applicable to those people who are assigned the duties, tasks and responsibilities of Lifeboat Coxswain or Lifeboat Commander, either on board a vessel or offshore installation.
- No. 3.322 Competence of Dynamic Positioning Operators - Station Keeping is aimed at persons responsible for maintaining the vessel’s position while the vessel carries out an assigned operation.
- No. 3.323 Competence of Maritime Teaching Professionals - Course Designers, Teachers, Lecturers, Trainers, Instructors, Assessors specifies the competence requirements for teaching professionals who can be made responsible for the design, delivery and/or assessment of a training programme.
- No. 3.324 Competence of Maritime Simulator Instructors specifies the competence requirements for simulator instructors who can be made responsible for the design, delivery and/or assessment of a simulator training programme.
